Member Benefits & CE

What BPS membership provides: the MBPS or SMBPS post-nominal, directory listing, the Society's standards and ethics framework, and continuing education opportunities for UK examiners.

What Membership Provides

Membership of the British Polygraph Society carries the following benefits for examiners practising in the United Kingdom:

Verified Directory Listing

Intern Members, Members, and Senior Members in good standing are entitled to a listing in the public BPS examiner directory. The directory is how members of the public, commissioners, and statutory bodies identify examiners who have met the Society’s admission criteria and are bound by the Code of Ethics.

Use of Post-nominals and Designations

Members in good standing may use the designations set out in Membership Criteria and Grades: “MBPS” for Members, “SMBPS” for Senior Members, and the designations provided for the other classes.

CPD and Continuing Education

The Society provides and accredits continuing professional development. Members are required to complete a minimum of 30 hours of CPD every two years under the CPD and Accreditation Policy. Society-provided CPD counts towards that requirement and is designed to meet the APA’s continuing education standards.

Professional Framework

Members practise within a published professional framework — the Code of Ethics, the Standards of Practice, and the Society’s other policies — which provides a defensible basis for conduct when dealing with commissioners, opposing parties, or regulators in connected fields.

Representation

The Society represents the shared professional interests of its members in relation to polygraph practice in the United Kingdom.

Complaints and Accountability

Members benefit from a published complaints and appeals procedure. Where a complaint is made against a member, it is determined by a Panel under the Complaints, Discipline and Appeals Procedure, with a defined standard of proof and a right of appeal.

Continuing Education Expectations

Membership is conditional on continuing competence. Members must:

  1. maintain current APA certification (or recognised equivalent);
  2. complete the minimum CPD required every two years;
  3. maintain appropriate professional indemnity insurance;
  4. comply with the Code of Ethics and the Standards of Practice; and
  5. notify the Secretary promptly of any of the matters listed at clause 10.3 of the Code of Ethics (criminal conviction or caution, disciplinary finding by another body, lapse of certification, or adverse civil or regulatory finding).
