Research and Standards at BPS
The British Polygraph Society maintains a Research and Standards Sub-Committee, established under the Constitution and the Committee and Officer Terms of Reference. The Sub-Committee is advisory to the Management Committee. It does not determine the content of the Standards of Practice, which are adopted and amended by the members in accordance with the Constitution.
Membership of the Sub-Committee
The Sub-Committee draws on Research Members, Senior Members, and invited external experts in fields relevant to polygraphy, including psychophysiology, credibility assessment, forensic science, statistics, and machine learning. Research Members (as provided in the Constitution and Membership Regulations) are eligible to be invited to sit.
Scope of the Sub-Committee’s Work
The Sub-Committee:
- reviews published research relevant to polygraph validity, accuracy, and methodology;
- advises the Management Committee on proposed updates to the Standards of Practice;
- considers applications for accreditation of training courses under the CPD and Accreditation Policy; and
- supports members in understanding the evidence base underlying validated polygraph techniques.
